Design the Perfect Study Spot

Design the Perfect Study Spot

Are you thinking of creating a dedicated space in your home for studying? Regardless of the amount of space you have to work with, you can create the ideal spot to promote concentration and comfort, and you don't have to give up style, either. We'll share some tips on how to create a place to study that's comfy, stylish and puts everything you need at your fingertips.

If you're creating this study spot for your child, keep in mind that kids don't study in the same way as adults. Your child might want to relax and recline to read an assignment instead of sitting up in a chair. If you can incorporate a sofa or chaise lounge into your study area, that will take it up a notch. And grown people like relaxation, too!

Lighting

When you're planning a home study hub, lighting is one of the crucial elements to consider. You need enough to be able to see well and concentrate, but not so much that it makes the space seem utilitarian. Focused lighting is important for reading, and daylight-spectrum light bulbs provide the clearest light. They also have a positive effect on mood since they mimic natural daylight. If your study area has a window, make sure the computer monitor is facing it directly or at an angle, so sunlight doesn't interfere with the screen.

 Ergonomics

This is a fancy word for the study of creating living and working spaces that provide the most comfort while allowing us to complete tasks efficiently. A comfortable chair is one of the most important pieces of furniture in an office or study. It should provide the right kind of support for sitting up straight with the spine and hips aligned. Height is important, and an adjustable chair is the most versatile for use at different workstations.

Comfort

When using your chair with a computer desk, the rule of thumb is to have the keyboard positioned so that your arms are close to your body in a relaxed position. The keyboard should be a couple of inches above your lap with the mouse next to it. Once you've arranged the desk and chair in the perfect position, you might find that your feet aren't flat on the floor. This is where an angled footstool is invaluable for keeping the correct posture and preventing back strain.

 Utility

This refers to the usefulness of your study hub and the way it fits into your home. You'll want to include the basics in a study spot, including a computer, printer, comfortable chair and desk. If the spot is in a prominent location, there are ways to make it blend in when not in use. This includes housing the printer in a drawer, or even a nook with a faux cabinet-front. Modular storage units can also be kept in a drawer or cabinet and brought out only when the area is being used for studying.

 Space

Creating the perfect study place is a challenge when you don't have a lot of room, but there are many ways around this. Any nook in the home can become an ideal place to study with the right fixtures. Add shelves, including one large shelf to serve as the desktop, and cabinets or a rolling file tower below the desk area. It helps delineate the study space if you add an area rug that extends far enough to encompass the chair.

A comfortable and efficient study space can also be created in a hallway, or even in a roll-top desk. If space is at a premium, time management is one way to create some privacy for studying. Work out a schedule that allows the person studying to use the spot when others aren't in the immediate area, and that will give it more of a secluded feeling.

 Style

There will be opportunities to indulge your sense of style when you design the perfect study place for your family, whether it's a desk, a nook or an enclosed room. A study spot can be defined by a unique wallpaper or paint selection, and there are countless colors and materials to consider when choosing a chair or desk. Start by defining how you want to use this space and then give it your own personal flair!
